[SADXA] 40m DAY DX of a Yagi vs K07SS CW Skimmer on a Dipole - Dec. 2nd

Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for your report.

Since you know Bill, I think it would be great for him to speak to our
group, regarding his skimmer operation. As a DX Club, the use of a
"backyard" skimmer at 8000 feet clearly has some value. Perhaps Don or
others could second the motion.

I certainly agree with your low angle argument. Most 40m take off angles are
about 24 degrees, but who knows how this changes for RECEIVING 40m DX?
Sounds like a nice research paper.

I do live way on the West side, where the Mt Lemon peak angle is about 5
deg. So for some, these mountains to EU are not an issue as you mentioned.

What intrigued me was the 40m DX CW CQs I did observe and record here
yesterday [received on my 3 ele yagi] between 2145z and 2245z was not
recorded at all on the KO7SS CW skimmer.

Thus, just because the skimmer is NOT recording the 40m DX, does NOT mean it
is not present and workable. However, if KO7SS does record 40m DX, it is
likely that many in Tucson could possibly work this DX, not withstanding the
limitations you cited.

Thanks for your input.

Bill, you'll need to take the KO7SS skimmer spots with a grain of salt.
Just because they log a call doesn't mean that some of our members will
be able to hear it.

I recently was over to Bill's place on Mt. Lemmon where he has the
skimmer and the dipoles. The antennas are near the top of the mountain,
about 45 feet above the terrain, and with the one I saw having a clear
view towards Europe.  I don't recall seeing a second antenna but it
could have been there.  The net effect of the extra work is that Bill's
skimmer can hear some of the stations that he can't copy down at his QTH
in the city.  So if somebody is well-situated, i.e., far enough away
from the mountains that the low angled signals can be received, he
should be able to hear some DX that others of us who are too close to
the mountains can't even detect.
