Yesterday I worked two stations on 10 meters. K6CES (San Jose CA) at 1902 and then N0KWX (Lees Summit MO) at 1918. Beginning around 1850 the K6FRC beacon from northern CA was coming in strong here. By 1930 the beacon was no longer audible and the band was closed.

For all you Sporadic Es followers -
I tracked the Austin Site for Vertical RF sounding data yesterday, to look
specifically at the foEs values vs time.
foEs is the Critical Frequency of the Es layer. foEs is the frequency where
a vertical RF signal is reflected back to earth due to the Es layer. Above
frequency foEs, the RF signal passes vertically through the Sporadic Es
Layer.
In general, the EsMUF ~ M x foEs, where the M factor is about 6 for the Es
Layer height of about 100km, and assuming a low elevation angle relative to
the horizon.
Here is the data for 4/28 UTC
TIME(UTC) / foEs(Mhz) / EsMUF(MHz)
1500z - 2.8 - 16.8
1600z - 4.9 - 29.4
1630z - 5.8 - 34.8
1700z - 7.5 - 45.0
1715z - 7.8 - 46.8
1730z - 6.2 - 37.2
1745z - 6.8 - 40.8
1800z - 4.9 - 29.4
1830z - 4.1 - 24.6
1900z - 4.0 - 24.0
2000z - 5.3 - 31.8
2100z - 4.6 - 27.6
2300z - 3.0 - 18.0
2359z - 2.4 - 14.4
ABOUT THE DATA
This data does not include a correction factor this is hop distance
dependent and the M factor is not precisely correct. Also this data was from
the Austin site 800 Mi from Tucson.
Since we know 6m was open a bit, then this suggests the MUF data is about 9%
in error, on the low side.
Note the Peak for the day occurred around 1715z.
At 1715z, the Sporadic Es layer Blanketed higher frequency RF signals such
that there was NO reflection returns from the F2 layer at this time.
This means lower bands were operating from the 100km Es layer and
experiencing short skips or hops, such as on 10m or 20m.
Currently, on 4/29 UTC @ 1525z, foEs has increased to 4MHz. We may be on
track for another foEs peaking event. Look for 10m opening 1st, as you will
note 10m should have been open from about 1600z to 1800z.
