Hi Bill,
It will be great to have you as a SADXA member.
I know many of my fellow members have been very active on FT8, but for me, I
keep trying to understand the fuss and the value of FT8. So far, my toe has
not been in the water.
Your comments were inspiring for me to realize the incredible value FT8 has
for Hams such as yourself.
I have talked with many hams that are blind, and another ham that had a
synthesized voice. But now I realize the significant value FT8 may have for
hams that are hearing impaired.
I wonder how many hams went QRT because of this very reason.
How exciting it must be for you to get back on the air.
How exciting it would be to find these QRT hams, and get them back on the
air as well --- with FT8.
Best 73's and Welcome!
Bill W7EXG

Subject: [SADXA] Hello!
Greetings SADXA,
For various reasons, I've been off the air since 1997! At that time my
numbers were: Mixed - 338, Phone - 336, CW - 333 and RTTY - 287. After
a number of moves, I ended up in Tucson in 2004. My hearing has gotten
so bad that I thought I'd never operate a radio station again. But
recently a friend introduced me to WSJT-X and FT8 . . . being able to
work a station with no sound at all has reignited my interest in
hamming! Even better will be if I can find software which will let me
operate other digital modes with no sound!
Last time I operated I was running 1,500 watts to a KT-34XA at 75' on
120 acres with no line noise! This time I plan to simply run 100 watts
to an OCF dipole up 20 - 30 feet on 80 - 6 meters, in a noisy
neighborhood. To that end I've purchased an IC-7300 and a small antenna
tuner. Hopefully by Dec. 1 I'll have the wire up in the air and be back
on the air again. After that I'll start attending SADXA meetings.
BTW - back in the late 80's/early 90's, W6XI and I were both in the San
Diego DX Club . . . hi Jerry! He doesn't realize it but he was very
influential in my wife and I eventually ending up in Tucson, thanks Jerry!
I just wanted to introduce myself.
Good DX & 73,
Bill - AA4M
