In opening up today's mail I found a certificate from the ARRL. Much to
my surprise it was an achievement award from last year's International
DX contest.
I was surprised to get it because when it was over I wasn't at all
pleased with my performance that weekend. This was my first serious
contest effort in over 25 years and all I could see at the time were my
tactical operating errors. Despite those mistakes and all of the
deductions for call sign typos, I won first place in the Arizona section
for the "Single Operator High Power CW" category. I'm encouraged to
find out that my rusty skills were still good enough to snag an award.
This is considerably below K6WSC's national award-winning level, and I'm
not likely to be any real competition to Bill for quite some time to
come. But at least the club has another contest award-winning member. :-)
This year I entered in one of the contest's other CW categories. We'll
see how I did in due time.
