Bill and Jerry,
I've had decades of experience with 2-meter propagation, but am still a comparative novice on 6. One thing I've observed is that on the rare occasions when the band is open over long distances, e.g. Arizona to Europe or Japan, a very low radiation angle is a big help. The guys with tall towers, hilltop locations, or both do much better than the rest. As Bill Orr wrote in his "Radio Handbook" many years ago, antenna height beats gain most of the time.
Like Jerry, I haven't noticed much, if any, correlation between Es and solar indices, but my 6-meter experience doesn't go back to the F2 days.
73 Ray

Well I have been on 6 now for around 10 to 12 years maybe a little longer and I have not been able to find any relationship of the solar numbers to what 6 does. I have had folks tell me what I can expect given certain numbers and that didnt hold any water. I have listend to "experts" talk about what it takes to make 6 go but when it comes to how to create an E layer they are not able to predict it. I guess that is why it is call the magic band. 6 does what it does when it does it.
One thing that is consistent and that is around the middle of June there seems to be more frequency of openings for what ever the reason. Also around the end off the year there is a higher likelyhood of openings. Yet the last few years have been pretty hard to find a good one.
That is one of the things that makes 6 unique. You cant just turn the radio on and hope there is an opening becasue it just is not going to happen. It requires one to always watch what is going on to catch a random opening. Most hams dont have the patience to do that.
So the beat goes on and we may have had the only opening to Europe we are going to have. I did not get a single opeing to EU the last two years. When it is open it is exciting for sure. Its like fishing I guess.
Thanks for the info Bill.
