I just read a fantastic book about the history of codes, not just the amazingly interesting history of the Enigma, but the book goes way back to early Egyptians sending secret, encoded messages. The book has tons of examples of early codes and even a few secret messages for the reader to decode. There is a very detailed history of the Enigma. I way recommend the book for anyone who thinks such things are cool – considering this audience, I expect that is most of us.

FWIW, I watched a very interesting PBS program today called “Dayton Codebreakers”.
Not sure if it will air again but you might want to look for it. It is about Joe Desch’s (sp?)
work with a vacuum tube machine using thyristors that was able to crack the 4 wheel Enigma code.
Something Turings machine was just too slow to do.
They never exactly mentioned if he was a ham.... anyone know?
