News from the VP8SGI team.
"On Sunday, we will be seeking ATNO contacts on 17 meters SSB. We will
QRT on Monday morning. Best wishes from the Intrepid-DX Group VP8 Team."
When the band has been open their signals have been fairly strong (S5+)
here in Tucson. If you need South Georgia Island, now would be an
excellent time to get them. A wire antenna should be sufficient to
crack the pileup, which on Sunday should be small enough to be manageable.
Some of the pileups that I've heard on several bands are now down to
just a dozen or less stations calling over a 5 KHZ spread. Open spaces
are available where they can be called without appreciable QRM. One of
my recent QSOs with them was on CW with under 100 watts and a half-wave
dipole antenna. It only took a couple of calls to get them, so that
means even a "little gun" setup should work, now that they've worked
down the numbers of those who needed them.
Give it a try if you need South Georgia and can get on 17m. That QSO
might even be worth putting up a long wire or a dipole for the weekend.
GL, Jim
