I don't have the log so the date is unclear, but it was probably in 1959.
I had a DX100 transmitter and a BC342 receiver. Something jammed in the dial of
the receiver and it wouldn't tune. It was beyond me to fix and my dad, who for
sure could have done it, had separated from my mom and moved out.
Ever resourceful, I took an old car radio, which had a permeability (slug) tuned
front end and a 262 KHz i-f. and tuned the slugs to get the received frequency
up on 160 and I built a 250 KHz crystal oscillator (close enough) and let it
leak into the front end. That was my BFO. The pi-net in the DX100 would tune
anything so I ran an end fed wire through the shack window and up to near the
top of a Eucalyptus tree in the back yard.
My first (and maybe only) contact was with a VE7.
