Originally, I thought they were hugely different in favor of the "old" radio and 
pointed this out to Elecraft.  I got a lot of info in return including the fact 
that IMD is highly frequency dependent.  I had been testing at one frequency.  
When I started looking at other frequencies, I learned that I had 
serendipitously found the "sweet spot" on the old radio.  Now I see that they 
both vary all over the map, depending on power, frequency, temperature and 
probably the phase of the moon.

A swept frequency spectrum analyzer would sure speed this up; I'm using an 
SDR-IQ, one frequency at a time.
