Hi SADXA Guys and Gals,

Below is the Link to the YouTube Video I mentioned at 5/21 SADXA meeting.

Footage was generated by Peter, VK3YE.. while on the beach with his 5W QRP Yaesu Rig, and a vertical with a TV Rabbit Ear counterpoise. Footage was included, while having a SSB QSO with yours truly, W7EXG (Bill). I noted this as a 1st for me (YouTube my QSO, by a DX station), since being licensed in 1956.

To set the stage:

I was on 17M, running 200W, with the SteppIR DB42, and was calling CQ about 9pm (2pm VK time)

NOTE: [The DB42 appears as a 5 ele Mono on 17M, on a 42 ft boom, and up ~ 60 ft. The Simulated Forward Gain is 8.65 dBd, referenced to a dipole. My total LMR600UF Coax loss is ~0.5db - so gain to the XCVR, including Coax loss, is about 8.15dBd]

I had just called CQ about 9pm (2pm VK Beach time).. Peter answered

He was Q5, using his "Beach Vertical", running 5W.

He subsequently reduced the power to 2.5W (Q5) .. and then 1W (Q3).

He told me he was recording, but I did not realize recording was a YouTube Video, until later on during the 15 Min. QSO.

As an Electrical Engineer, it is interesting for me to consider the amount of an electrical signal at my antenna from a 1 watt output on a small vertical antenna, (radiating equally poor in all directions) 8000 Miles away. I was pretty sure I heard him say 1 watt (see Video)

Here is the link regarding VK3YE Beach Vertical, and the VK3YE/W7EXG QSO described above.

Hope you enjoy it..

One thing we can all say for sure about Ham Radio.. there are many interesting surprises..

Best 73s,

Bill W7EXG
