So they say. But that just means that the maximum is straight up, not that
there is no radiation at other angles.
The same is oft-stated about verticals vs. horizontal dipoles. If you examine
patterns in isolation, the vertical may show greater radiation at lower angles
than does the horizontal. But if you overlay them and examine the patterns on
the same scale, the "high angle" dipole can have better performance at useful
angles.
I've even worked some DX (VK, ZL8, VP6, etc) using an 80-meter inverted V and my
barefoot TS870SAT. Might have been radiating a couple of watts :-)
