Here is a dandy visualization of one of the effects that often accompanies a big CME and blast of solar wind.

  Some of this is based upon new knowledge, obtained in this case from the THEMIS satellites. 

   The amount of energy 'springing' back from the dark side of the Earth is more than previously understood.

  And all that energy affects the ionosphere, satellites, and enhances those auroras (that we did not see here!). :-)
