The loss of memberships in any ''club'' or organization is a 'mixed-bag' but
primarily results from
a lack of interest when there aren't activities that promote the desire to
participate.
Ham radio clubs need activities that create interest TO it's members.
Repeater activity, in general and
throughout the NYC/Metro area, has been on the decline for years now.
Reasons vary, of course, but
mainly because there isn't enough interesting activities to maintain
participation. Many newly licensed hams have found
nothing 'material' to spend their time with and gravitate to other
interests. Open dissension from longer term members about club
activities or lack of activities adds to generating disinterest and
drop-out.
It is a nearly impossible task for a club leadership to keep enough
interesting activities that will satisfy every member.
Members need to feel ''included'', of material value..........members should
be polled to determine what are the facets of ham radio
that interest them and go forward with programs on those subjects.
I believe that RVRC is on that path now. Members can and should make their
ideas known to the club as a whole
and topics can be discussed. There's a whole world of things to do and
learn.
On the topic of our ''repeaters'', we have experienced a decline in the use
of our repeaters for a long time now; for years!
Other clubs have experienced the same dilemma.
We have two repeaters and not enough activity to keep either one active.
There are several activities that could regenerate
interest and can be presented to the membership as a whole. Find which
activities are of enough interest to
members that will generate getting on the repeater(s) to talk about it.
Since the re-organization of RVRC from it's original formation (1927), our
repeater has always been used as a 'tool' for members to keep in-touch
with each other and talk about activities of common interest.
We have experienced no increase of activities with the linking of our 70 cm
repeater (442.250 MHz) to a network outside of our area (save one or two
QSO's each month).
Do any of our members have ideas? Your club leadership needs to hear from
ALL members on what each of us have on our minds.
What did each of you believe that belonging to RVRC would do for you??.
Let's all be ''fraternal'' and ''open minded'' to regenerate our ham radio
club which was active and to which that membership was very much
sought-after.

Marv, K2VHW

I agree RVRC has enough on its plate. Dual analog/ digital technology with
pictures had been done decades ago in the cell phone industry, hardly new
technology. Has no one noticed that our 440 has not been passing audio for
the past week? The internet control has been lost supposedly due to a
change in internet providers? Were we not paying for at least part of that?
I can't reset it remotely and the technical guys are MIA. E-mail to Paul on
Wednesday has been unanswered. The 2 meter system has been nearly dead. I
recently started listening more often, and aside from 2 or 3 guys, it has
been mostly silent all day. John, how many members have we lost in 2015? I
had not been informed.

I realy agree with Drew. Since the PL was changed the repeater activity has
declined because some rigs are programmed via computer and the computer
programs are not available to all for instanceMotoraola to name one and
there are more. Increased dues caused a lot of members to drop out. Now we
have less money coming in, so we gained nothing raising the
dues.
