Hello,

I hope you're having an enjoyable 4th of July weekend. If you're not
chasing the 13 Colonies special event, perhaps you'd be interested in a
special presentation that is being offered by the Bergen Amateur Radio
Association (BARA) tomorrow, Sunday, July 5th.

"The Bergen Amateur Radio Association Speaker Series" presents:
“Summits on the Air,” presented by Guy Hamblen (N7UN).

Summits on the Air (SOTA) is an award scheme for radio amateurs and
shortwave listeners that encourages portable operation in mountainous
areas. SOTA has been carefully designed to make participation possible
for everyone – this is not just for mountaineers! There are awards
for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers (who
either operate from home, a local hilltop or are even Activators on
other summits).

Guy was first licensed in 1963 as KN7YYK, then AA7QZ, and N7UN in 1996.
Since 1994 when he moved to NJ with his job, he discovered DXing which
culminated recently with Top of the Honor Roll when he worked KP1
(Navassa), his last one!

He's always been a mountain climber and VHF hill topper but with the
proliferation of small, backpackable HF CW rigs,he has been very active
over the past 8 years with SOTA (Summits On The Air), a UK-based awards
program patterned after the IOTA system.

His first effort was the establishment of most of the W7 states into
Associations within the SOTA program. W7 has more than 17,000+
SOTA-qualified peaks! An Association is a catalog of SOTA-qualified
peaks. In 2014, he received the first “Sherpa Award”, recognition
for his contribution to the SOTA program in 2013. SOTA is a great radio
community comprised of “Activators” (those who hike one of the
qualified peaks and setup a portable radio for qsos) and “Chasers”
(those who contact the Activators). A point scoring system is in place
for both Activators and Chasers. See http://www.sota.org.uk/ for more
information. He uses the call NS0TA for all his SOTA activations.

The talk will be given at the July 5, 2015 monthly meeting of the
Bergen Amateur Radio Association at 7:30pm.

There is no cost to attend and refreshments are available. All are
welcome!

The meeting will be held at:
The Township of Washington Senior Center
350 Hudson Ave
Twp. of Washington, NJ 07676
