RVRC Members,

Marguerite Shreve, the wife of RVRC Life Member Richmond Shreve, W2EMU, has
had he email hacked. Many of you know the Shreve family and may receive  an
inadvertent email from an untruthful source. Please read the blog below
before responding to an email.

Marguerite's Email Was Hacked!

Dear Eldred,

All is well, but some of you received an email saying that we were mugged in
Manila, Philippines and needed money to get home. This was a hoax and a scam
attempt to defraud you of money.

Here is the text of the phony email:

I hope this email finds you well!

 I could not inform everyone about our family trip to Manila Philippines
The Vacation was successful, but our journey has turned sour we were mugged
last night at gun point and all valuables were stolen, (cash, bank cards and
mobile phone, it was a brutal experience we went to shop before leaving to
the airport since our return flight soon, quite honestly it was beyond a
dreadful experience for us but looking on the bright side we weren't
seriously hurt or injured, we are still alive so that is what's important
and luckily we had my passport in my hotel room to get us home.

 I need your help financially to get back home, I need to settle some
outstanding hotel bills and also take a cab to the airport. I am really
sorry i am asking this of you, believe me I don't want to ask I would rather
take care of it my self but I cant, I have contacted my bank, but the best
they can do is to mail a new card which will take 7 to 10 days to get here.
All I need right now is $1950 , If you can help that would be great and I
promise to make the refund once I get back home.

Was There AnyClue This Was a Scam?

Although the "from" address was actually Marguerite's email, the "reply"
address was a phony AOL address someone created in her name. It may have
looked legit at first glance, but there were clues that it was a fraud

  1. It was sent to "undisclosed recipients".
  2. It has grammar errors.
  3. It gives a different reply address than her usual address.
  4. One can just as easily phone as email these days. 

But the trauma the email describes could cause people who know and love
Marguerite to be so concerned that they would miss the clues and react
without much thought. The scam artist counts on this shock effect (termed
social engineering) and the desire of friends and relatives to come to the
rescue. All they need is one or two victims to make this scam pay. The
cruelty of the ruse is that those who are closest to the person "mugged" are
most likely to respond without thinking twice.

We hope none of you who care so much were deceived.

How Did the Scammer Get Your Addresses?

Earlier in the week Marguerite responded to an email, ostensibly from Apple,
that purported to offer expanded iCloud service. It was a ruse to gain
access to her email account and snatch her address book. There was no
obvious way to spot that the email was a fraud, and when the thief stole the
address book, he or she also erased all of her email history, thus
eliminating our ability to share this bit of the fraud with you.  But
suffice it to say that unless you are expecting an email with a link, and
know it to be authentic, you should not respond. Most organizations will ask
you to close the email and log in to your account. Exceptions would be
emails you get in response to a request you made.

Thanks to all who called or emailed us about this "spoof" as hackers call
it. We regret the drama. To add insult to injury, Marguerite has spent most
of the afternoon on the phone with Apple security and Apple support getting
her email working again.
