Guys,

Those that are friends with me on Facebook have seen
recently that I joined the rapidly growing list of people that are using DMR
digital on the amateur bands. DMR was first known here in the US as
Motorola's MotoTRBO, but it's an international standard created by the ETSI
in Europe.

The cost of even second-hand Motorola equipment made it a
difficult mode to break into, and some of the other brands aren't that cheap
either (namely Hytera, etc.). Late last fall, Connect Systems out of
California began selling the HT shown here in my video for the unbelievable
price of $180. Motorola gear goes brand-new for about $800-$1000, and the
Hytera models go for $600-$800.

There is currently an application in to MetroCor requesting
coordination for a UHF pair in Martinsville, so those that live in the RVRC
footprint area might have a local machine in the not-to-distant future! This
mode is TDMA, which means the repeater can have two simultaneous QSO's going
on at the same time (almost identical to the format used in the new P25
Phase-II trunking).

There is a Wednesday-night tech net hosted by one of the
groups that is a part of the world-wide link, and I recorded a few minutes
for those that want to see how the unit performs:

If anyone is interested in learning more, take a look at the
website of the largest club in the US - they basically got this whole mode
going for hams: www.dmr-marc.net <http://www.dmr-marc.net> .
