The ''secret'' to grounding is that the protection comes from the 
'distribution of current/charge'!!   That is, since lightning produces 
incredibly high currents and voltages, the principle is to distribute that 
'charge' over as large an area as possible in order to reduce damaging 
currents in any one direction.  Even though lightning currents will flow 
''upward'' or ''downward'' if those currents can be distributed over a very 
large area, the damage is significantly reduced!!!
