I know from personal experience that these digital TETRA radios in our buses have much to be desired.Reason being of the dead spots along my route. The voices are not natural&you are either in range or not.I'm sure this is what they are experiencing. We can make our repeaters available for emergency use should the need arise in Dunellen.Good publicity would be awesome for our club&it could open up many doors for us.Lets not blow it but lets work together since this rare door is open.I'm sure the vast knowledge in this club can be pooled together to come to a solution.I'm confident we can do this. This is indeed exciting&could generate a greater membership.

I have access to a portable spectrum analyzer that would aide in this.

Marvin, I totally agree. This problem may only be affecting the
portables and not the mobiles. Too many times we have taking the route
of not adequately diagnosing the problem before throwing money at the
problem. Maybe we can track down one of these mobile spectrum analyzers
and enlist W2AEW and K2DSV into giving us guidance.I'm sure someone out
there is trying to sell a costly RF study package to the muncipalities
as we speak.

RVRC members,

We have to keep in mind the one comment made by Jim
Ashworth...................."The radio companies will just want to sell

more equipment which we really can't afford."

Yes, we can suggest added equipment like vehicular repeaters which would
require a.) equipping all their vehicles with REPEATER equipment and
b.)carrying another radio to receive/transmit with the vehicle repeater!

The most likely problem with 'dead spots' in this digital system is
BER.....bit error rate issues caused by multipath and/-or- noise/signal
interference.

Having a good spectrum analyzer can identify what is causing a
'dead-spot' but correcting that 'cause' might be outside of Dunellen's
reach!

What ever the resolution results may be, there's going to be some
'financial cost' to Dunellen or Piscataway or both.

First step is to obtain a good spectrum analyzer capable of analyzing
DIGITAL signals and identify the issues before we can go forward with
any suggestions for resolution.

Members,

I didn't expect to find this request for assistance in my inbox this
morning. As many of you know we had a great relationship with the
Dunellen municipality for a considerable number of years and that
community put the W2QW hamfest on the map as the one to go to in central
Jersey.

Dunellen and Piscataway are encryptic systems now and both have dead
spots. I would like to see some dialogue in the local ham community as
to how we can assist in any way. If anyone is interested in exploring a
solution please chime in by responding.

This may be far fetched, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I am former councilman James Ashworth of Dunellen and was responsible
for our Police Department for roughly 8 years.  Since I left council the
town has put in a radio system to allow Piscataway to be our
dispatchers. However, the police and fire are claiming there are dead
spots within the town creating a safety issue.  My idea is to reach out
to your club for help. The radio companies will just want to sell us
more equipment which we really can't afford.  I was hoping your group
could come up with some suggestions on how to open up these dead zones
without a great investment, or maybe take it on as a community service
project.

Your knowledge and tricks could save the tax payers of Dunellen money.
It would also be great press for your organization.

If you are not interested, I will understand that as well, but I at
least have to reach out and try.

Thank you.

Jim Ashworth

Dunellen, NJ
