As a very active VE in the area and having done extensive work with the
Amateur Radio Health Consortium I have participated in the testing and
licensing process of first responders in Middlesex, Mercer, Warren, Somerset
and Hunterdon counties of New Jersey. I have personally have had many
conversations with the candidates. Their biggest questions after a course is
"How can they use their new licenses". Fortunately the organizing groups
make every effort to get them involved in ARES activities and usually have
obtained a grant and provisioned the first responder locations with
excellent mobile and HT equipment.
This summer quite a few RVRC VEs participated in Hamcram session with CERT
teams in Manalapan, MJ in June and November. The governing township involved
the new licensees in the 2013 Field Day event to give them a good exposure
to operating. Because they are involved in CERT they are visible to the
communities they serve. Many of the new first responders also participated
in public service events with the Cherryville ARC.
For many club members getting out in the public utilizing your operation
skills to support municipal and community events is non-existent. Hams need
to engage in FEMA training courses so they can be of useful service to your
respective communities. The only way to be viewed as a resource is to
enhance your training in the incident command response structure by
constantly refreshing your training repertoire. Some of us once we pass the
license class we want never open a book again. The technology is advancing
so fast it's good to stay on the edge.
As for the new hams I've seen many of them at hamfests throughout the area
and I continue to field questions from them to clarify the many facets of
our hobby. So, It's all good. Many of these new hams have checked into our
nets or inquired about our meeting.
73,
Drew

IMHO, it's all good!!! Of those obtaining ham radio licenses for the
purpose of emergency service, that activity will etch their interest and
promote expansion of their activities. The social experience will further
develop their growth in the hobby.
The negative would be if they remain 'stagnant' and don't use their
licenses, that would not add to their skills and interest.
