Subject: RVRC Club Member Feedback
Hello Everyone
At our March Meeting on 3/13/2013, the members in attendance requested that the Executive Board solicit input on the following matter.
Please note up front that this 'request for membership input' is not a binding voting mechanism. This is purely input for the consideration of the Executive Board members. The current club by-laws only allow for official email based voting in the case of Membership applications.
Item for comment
Connection of the W2QW 440 Repeater to the WAN (Wide Area Network) Repeater system.
Several months ago, we had to disconnect our local machines from the Central NJ hub operated by KB2EAR and other owners of the various linked repeaters. This resulted in a very 'quiet' 440 W2QW repeater.
In an effort to expand usage and to give our members additional contact opportunities, the W3WAN -
WAN Repeater System operators were contacted to see if there was a compatibility with our system. The WAN operators were interested since we provide an eastward extension of their largely Pennsylvania centric network. Some of there PA based members travel to NYC and some of our members spend time in PA for various reasons. It seemed like a reasonable match for a trial period.
You can find out more about the WAN repeater system here:
http://www.wanrepeater.com/
The link up was proposed as a 'full time' link to the primary WAN hub. This is comparable to the way we used to be connected to the CNJ Hub system. As such, there are some periods where their primary users generate a fair bit of traffic in the form of RACES nets, county OEM nets, general group check in 'nets' (not unlike our Social Net) as well as traditional call-out / rag chew sessions. We have been disconnecting from the WAN during our Sunday Social Net and also during the K2ETS General Information Net on Wednesday evenings.
The link with W3WAN has been discussed and was initially approved by members during a regular meeting. After an initial period, some members have expressed concern that this activity is not necessarily relevant to our group. At the same time, several other members have taken advantage of the opportunity to call local NJ friends while traveling or working in the WAN coverage area (roughly Pittsburgh to the Poconos and southward into NW Maryland). Drive time rag chew is also pretty easy to get going also.
The RVRC Executive Board is seeking you input on this discussion item.
a. Are you in favor of having W2QW connected to the WAN repeater system?
b. Are you in favor of disconnecting the link to the WAN repeater system?
c. Have you used the link and if so any comments (pro or con)?
d. Other Comments:
Please address your responses to the following email address for consideration:
eboard at w2qw.njpaasterisk.org
It order to avoid email overload - please do not 'Reply All' to the rvrc mailman list. The Executive Board members will only consider email comments to the 'eboard' address listed above. Any email reflector responses (rvrc mailman list) will not be considered.
The Executive Board has defined the 'comment period' to be 2 weeks (ending March 30) at which time the input will be summarized and a decision will be made by the board regarding how W2QW will or will not interact with the WAN network.
Our President - KB2VRM - has stated that once the Executive Board makes their decision, that this will be final and further discussion will not be entertained at meetings so that other business can proceed in an orderly fashion.
Please make your feelings known to the Executive Board.
Thanks for your participation
