DAVID SARNOFF RADIO CLUB
APRIL 2013 MEETING

Joint Meeting with IEEE PCJS Broadcast Technology Chapter

ARRL Lab: Trials, Tribulations and (Tall?) Tales
Ed Hare, W1RFI, ARRL Laboratory Manager

* Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 7:30 PM

* American Red Cross, 707 Alexander Road, Training Room
Princeton, NJ 08540. See http://n2re.org/ for map and directions.

Why is your choice of test equipment important? How should you measure
intermodulation distortion? Ed Hare, an expert in this field,
will describe measurement procedures straight from the ARRL Lab,
including his work on Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) - and he will work
in a few tales that you have never read about. Ed’s quick wit and
insightful observations guarantee you a well-spent evening. Ed claims
that his tales are not tall ones, but those that have heard them can
never really be sure. Bring questions and see if you can stump this
expert!

Ham Radio Operators, IEEE members, students and guests are all welcome.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Please RSVP to: Joe Stack, BT Chapter Chair
(609) 647-9677 or mailto:jstack at ieee.org

About the ARRL:
The ARRL is the American Radio Relay League. Founded in 1914, the
American Radio Relay League is the national association for amateur
radio in the USA. Today, with more than 160,000 members, the ARRL is the
largest organization of radio amateurs in the world. The ARRL's mission
is based on five core areas or "pillars": Public Service, Advocacy,
Education, Technology, and Membership.

Biographical information:
Ed Hare, W1RFI, is employed by the American Radio Relay League. After an
industry career in product testing, he came to work at ARRL HQ in 1986.
He started as ARRL’s "Product Review" test engineer, moved on to
becoming ARRL’s "RFI guru" (notice his call!) [RFI is Radio Frequency
Interference] and he now holds the position of Laboratory Manager. Over
the years, he has written quite a number of RFI articles, ranging from
articles for QST magazine and the "ARRL Handbook" to articles about the
practical aspects of RFI that have appeared in professional trade
journals. He is also one of the editors and authors of the ARRL "RFI
Book" and the author of the ARRL's book on RF exposure, "RF Exposure and
You." He is very active holding a seat for Amateur Radio on various
industry committees, serving as a voting member on the IEEE EMC Society
Standards Development and Education Committee as elected Secretary, the
ANSI accredited C63® EMC Committee as Vice Chair of Subcommittee 5 on
Immunity, the IEEE P1775 BPL EMC committee, the Chair of the IEEE
Connecticut Section and others, representing ARRL and the interests of
Amateur Radio as industry standards are developed. He is a member of the
IEEE Standards Association, the IEEE EMC Society and the Power
Engineering Society. His personal operating interest is QRP CW, where
Ed’s motto is, "Five Watts is a Lot of Power!" He is presently doing
work on HF using 10 milliwatts, reporting 30 states worked, all in the
ARRL CW Sweepstakes.

All are invited to join in an informal pre-meeting dinner at the Super
Star East Buffet, 311 Nassau Park Blvd, Princeton, NJ 08540
(same location as our annual holiday party) at 6:15 PM.
