I haven't had a chance until now to thank everyone who responded, either 
by phone or email.  I got lots of good ideas but there were just no 
generators to be found anywhere.  In the end we survived without one 
until yesterday at 9pm.  While being cold and dark was inconvenient, it 
wasn't terrible.  We had hot showers due to a gas-fired water heater and 
one room that was more comfortable with a fireplace.  LED flashlights 
are amazing, they will light an entire room if you stand them on end! 
We didn't lose anything in the freezer because we stocked it with 
zip-loc bags of water that froze in advance of the power outage and with 
minimal opening kept the food frozen for 4 days.

Radio-wise, battery power kept me active on the Skywarn and ARES nets 
throughout the event and, even though my dipole came partially down from 
the wind, I was able to check in to the NJPN on 75 meters with low power 
battery operation.  A successful test of amateur radio capability!
