Subject: FYI: Imposter using fake callsign on repeater systems
This email was received today from Leon (N0TAZ) of the Newark Amateur Radio Club as an FYI on an imposter using their repeater system.
Good day, gentlemen,
I'm passing this information on to each of you because either you use the BEARS repeater system or you are a repeater owner.
Yesterday evening after ending a QSO with a station on the BEARS 70 cm system, another station called me, stating that he had recently purchased a Baofeng HT that I had discussed in my prior QSO. He said that his name was "Lou", and that his call sign was - - get this - - K2JU879. I had him repeat it twice more, after which I asked, in an obvious tone of disbelief, if he said that his call was K2JU879. He didn't respond to my first or second inquiry, obviously aware that I caught on that his call sign was not valid.
K2JU is a valid call sign of a ham in California. His name is not Lou. Just a note of caution to be alert for this fraud. That said, please have a safe, happy and celebratory 4th of July.
