Subject: Emergency Communication Exercise June 25-26

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Amateur Radio operators of the David Sarnoff Radio Club
to participate in National Emergency Communications
Exercises in Princeton

Princeton, NJ - On June 25 and 26, 2011, area amateur
radio operators will demonstrate their ability to
construct and operate a functioning emergency
communications center. This annual preparedness exercise
known as ?Field Day? will take place on the grounds
of
the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. The event
is conducted by Amateur Radio Operators of the David
Sarnoff Radio Club (DSRC), an independent volunteer club
of local Licensed Amateur Radio operators.

Field Day is a nationwide annual event organized by the
American Radio Relay League (ARRL) for licensed Amateur
Radio Operators around the United States to practice
volunteer civilian defense. Emergency preparedness has
become a necessity to support local emergency response
efforts. Amateur radio operators have proven to be an
essential link for communications after other
communication methods may be disabled or overloaded such
as during the terrorist attacks on 911, Hurricane
Katrina, and the Haitian Earthquake

Field Day events are guided by coordinated national
rules of issued by the American Radio Relay League.
Field Day participants must assemble a communications
center ?in the field?, complete with radios,
computers,
and antennas. The Field Day site must be fully
operational for 24 continuous hours and exchange contact
information with as many other Field Day stations as
possible across the country. The DSRC has taken on an
extra challenge by selecting to operate all radios using
very low power and only on battery power.
The DSRC was founded in 1975 and has 140 members. Club
members engage in advancing their technical skills,
contributing to the art of radio communications, and the
club frequently provides emergency communications for
public events as a voluntary noncommercial service. The
Club supports the American Red Cross of Central New
Jersey in time of emergencies by assisting with
communications when other forms of telecommunications
may be out of service.
Each year during the Field Day event the DSRC has
demonstrates their emergency communication abilities to
local residents, public officials, and the media. DSRC
extends an invitation to the general public to visit
their working radio station set up in the field during
daylight hours, between 2:00 PM Saturday, June 25, and
2:00 PM Sunday, June 26. Everyone who visits,
especially grade school children, will get a chance to
participate in the action by talking ?live? on the
air
to other Field Day radio stations all around the
country.
The DSRC Field Day station will take place at the
American Red Cross of Central New Jersey, located at 707
Alexander Rd., just off of Route 1 in Princeton.
Follow the signs to the ?FIELD DAY? site.
