Comments:
For a couple of years DK3QZ, DL3HAH and DL3YM had been thinking about doing a joint ham radio project. Our ideas finally materialized at the 2015 RRDXA spring meeting when we worked out a plan to combine an IOTA activation with a sailing trip. As several potential locations were already booked by other teams Kaprije, EU 170, became our destination.
We boarded our boat in Split and spend 5 days to sail to Kaprije, taking our time to anchor in gorgeous bays and operate /mm. Station setup on Kaprije commenced on Friday before the contest. Erecting our Folding Antenna on a 15 meter mast and stretching the double zepp antenna for the lowbands under a burning sun with temperatures reaching almost 40° C wasnt for the faint hearted. But as we are always saying, contesting aint for Sissies! We were finally ready to roll just one hour before the contest.
We experienced very heavy interference from the mult station, so only a handful of QSOs were made with the second radio. As we had agreed on maximizing fun being our top priority over optimizing score, we did not care very much and running was the name of the game. Condx were poor overall, we never got anything going on 10 meters and only had relatively short openings on 15. Yet 20 and 40 provided nice runs and all Ops got their share of adrenaline rush. Taking down the antennas after the contest went smooth and we had another week of cruising through the fantastic Croatian islands, getting our share of meeting the very friendly and hospitable locals and enjoying the yummy cuisine.
It is a good sign if you already talk about where do we go next on the return trip, so be prepared to more joint operations from this group.
Special thanks go to Kai, DL3HAH, for being a competent skipper, Stefan, DL5XX, for supporting the sailing team during the first week and Achim, DL1DAW, who could not join the team due to personal reasons.
And, last but not least, we would like to than our XYLs and families for letting us go on this adventure. Vy 73\'s ....
