The storm is due to hit land, probably Galveston Texas, sometime between
0500 and 0800 GMT Saturday morning. The waves are predicted to be 8m high.
It won't be quite as bad as Katrina, but it is expected to be bad, with
winds peaking at 200 kmh. The entire city of Galveston has been evacuated.
It should hit here sometime tomorrow, but by the time it reaches Oklahoma,
it will have died down to only 60 to 80 kmh winds.
I was planning to put up a Spiderbeam today, just in time for the contest.
Won't happen - not in those winds!
So looks like I will be activating the "Weak Signal Company" again.

sofort reagieren.

[CQ-Contest] Hurricane Ike and the September VHF Contest

I echo Dave and Rich's comments. The ARRL September VHF QSO Party, Worked
All Europe SSB DX Contest, North American SSB Sprint, NCCC Sprint, PODXS 070
Club 80-Meter Autumn Sprint and the Arkansas QSO Party are just some of the
events going on this weekend. We as a community need to be VERY mindful of
the other uses of spectrum this weekend and cooperate as much as possible.

I have to agree with Dave. There will be some very serious stuff going on
down in the Gulf starting tonight and tomorrow, with a high possibility of
loss of life, damage in the hundreds of millions of dollars (especially if
Houston take it on the nose), and lots of traditional communications routes
that will be down.
As far as I am concerned, it is imperative that operators in the contest be
cognizant of the emergency ops taking place above 14.300, and should,
frankly consider avoiding that swath of 20 meters this weekend.
I'm a strong proponent of using the bands when normal conditions exist, and
believe that many nets are insufferable in their complaining, but this
situation is quite extraordinary, and the contest community will get a
SEVERE black eye if there is a perception that the contest has interfered
with actual health/welfare or emergency traffic.
My thoughts...
