Garmin Overlander meets my needs. I rove offroad and camp on mountains in
the Pacific Northwest. This GPS is full featured for road navigation and has
lots of features for off-road use. I think it's easy to use; if you're
familiar with Garmin UI then you'll be right at home.

I have rover friends that swear by (and save money compared to above) Gaia
GPS software. They run the app on a smartphone or get a USB-attached GPS
puck for the laptop.

Personally, I also travel with a Griduino. It doesn't navigate; I use the
Overlander for that. Griduino tracks where you've been and how you got
there, and shows the grid lines around you. (I designed, build and sell this
device.) It's out of stock at the moment while I update it for the next
version.

Subject: [Rover] Which GPS unitd do you like for roving
I'm planning to Rove in the June VHF contest for the first time in many
years. I'm working out operating positions using Google Earth. I'd like to
fly a nice GPS unit for the vehicle that I can easily transfer the Google
Earth points into. A unit with voice commands would also be very nice. What
recommendations would you make? Thank you for your kind consideration.
Thanks,
Robin Midgett K4IDC
