This is from an email from W3IY:
Here's the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel info... Chief
Clement Pruitt is the guy in charge of permission. I hope the
bird watchers haven't stirred up any trouble for us...there
was an article in the paper a few months ago that the bird-
watchers were bringing a law suit against the bridge for stopping
them from getting permits due to homeland security concerns.
We'll see. I usually tell them exactly when I want to be there
(with a big window), describe my system (self-contained vehicle),
and promise to move on short notice, if asked. The police
always stop by to say hello...and I always check in at the toll
booth...then they call on the radio and tell the patrol cars.
I always tell them I am participating in a nationwide radio
activity weekend...I don't recommend using the word contest.
I think this word can give the wrong impression. It might make
sense to reference me and Brian Skutt by name, as we have
been there many times...and they know what we are doing, and
seem to want to help us. I usually tell them I want to stop on Islands
2 (FM16wx), 3 (FM17xa), and the scenic overlook (FM27ac). Island
1 is the public island closest to Va Beach where the restaurant is located.
Many guys just operate from there without permission...but u need it
to hit any other islands. (maybe not the FM27 overlook). There are
always loads of curious question-bearing folks at the restaurant, which
can be difficult...from my experience on Skyline drive...hi. In the past,
I have faxed them, and requested they call me on the phone. Then
I write a record of the phone call on my copy of the fax, and this
seems to satisfy the police. I needed the hard copy one time, when
the patrol cars didn't get the memo about us coming...they really
wanted some paper...hi. Usually a week in advance is sufficient for them.
