Hi Mike,
I use two map programs on my laptop, both of which are GPS enabled: Street
Atlas 5 and Topo!. (I also have Street Atlas 2003 but I prefer Street Atlas
5.) Street Atlas is used to generate my actual high-level routes (and to
provide the map graphics for my web pages
http://www.intac.com/~mherson/rover.htm
Topo! is used for the actual detail mapping and finding the actual hill tops
as we are wandering around. We (my wife Karen, who does the driving and I)
use the State series of Topo! which includes *all* the topo maps for a given
state (sometimes a whole region in one package). These are all maps
precision scanned from the USGS original paper maps.
One of the other things we do is to collect information about sites that
other people have operated from and make it available on the web. You can
find this at the N2MH RoveSite Locator Page at
http://www.intac.com/~mherson/rovesite.htm
Feel free to peruse the site and use or submit some site suggestions. Among
other things on the site are text files that can be downloaded which can be
imported into both of the above map programs and show the operating sites on
the maps in their exact locations.
Oh yes, either of these two map programs runs in one window while my logging
program (WriteLog) runs in another window. Also useful is a little utility
called GPSTime that allows you to set your laptop's clock from your GPS.
This can be found at

Hope this helps you out.
