Hi Jacob,

The "best" antenna for 6? Now that's a tough one.
The one I've tried that had the most gain, was a
homebrew 4 element yagi. It worked real well, but was
a pain to setup. One time I tried to 'walk up' the
mast with a little too big a load and, sadly, the yagi
didn't survive that mistake...

The most convenient antenna I have used is a homebrew
1/2 wave loop. Small, and works well, but not much
gain to speak of. I worked a ton of QSO's last week
with just the loop. But there are times when I really
miss having the yagi.

I've used a plain and simple dipole, and it worked
well, but again I often miss the gain of the yagi. I
didn't "droop" the yagi, but they really aren't that
big anyway. I made my dipole out of 1/2" copper water
pipe. Cheap and easy to find.

The best antenna for 6? Well, it depends on what's
more important to you; gain or size. If you can't use
a yagi, then a loop is a convenient alternative. If
you don't have a loop, then build a dipole. It will
work about as well, and isn't much bigger.

A project I'm working on, but didn't get finished in
time for last week's contest, is a stacked pair of
homebrew loops. I'll let you know how they turn out.
