This is how I got started.  Some kind soul took a moment to explain what =
all the 'CQ Contest' was about, and let me know that even if I wasn't in =
it for myself, I could still give out points to those who were.  Got me =
started in contesting (and now, roving.)

May I humbly suggest that you periodically mention that in your CQ?  =
That "you don't have to be in it to give folks some points, and the more =
noise we make, the better for ham radio!"  I don't know the ethics of =
tapping a local repeater to remind people that a contest is underway, =
but that might help get some of the repeater junkies over to simplex...
