Excellent suggestion! A standard copper plated steel welding rod
is much stiffer then soft drawn copper wire. Ask for steel welding
rod for use with either a gas or TIG torch.

The only problem I have had using welding rod is that they only
come in 30" or 36" lengths so that they are manageable. This makes
them well suited for 220MHz and above but too short for a 2m beam.
I have joined the rods in the center with a small sleeve of brass
tubing and solder though.
