The biggest problem with the DEM kits is that the instructions
are a bit vague. The TenTec instructions are second to only
Heathkit so they are very good. With the TenTec you would
check off each item as you installed it. They also did a good
job of breaking down the testing to each stage so that if you
encountered a problem it was easier to find.
The DEM instructions list a number of parts to be installed in
each step. Like step one installs 8 resistors and a couple
capacitors. The parts placement drawing isn't as clear either.
Of course these impressions are based on a kit I built a few
years ago, things may be different now.
As for the tuneup side of things the DEM was FAR simpler. The
IF filters come pretuned. All you do is put the LO on frequency
and peak it's output and adjust the receiver preamp for maximum
gain and your done!
You may wish to talk to DEM about the ease of their kit assembly.
They have also been very helpful with tuning transverters that
have been assembled by their owners. With the 432 and lower
frequency boxes this isn't much of a problem but the higher
band transverters can be a bit more picky.
Hope that helps...
