Jacob,
I'm an old lover of old Subarus.
I've used my '72 wagon for portable ops many times, and as a Rover a
couple of times. Do you have a roof rack? I would suggest that would be
a necessity, and one can be found at most any wrecking yard with subarus,
if you need one.
Then just begin by using the concept of a design as you see in a
picture of an an existing one. You will soon find that you want to
change things for one reson or another.
A rotatabe mast from a rear trailer hitch works well for some, and it
can be guyed to the roof rack. Others use fixed mounts and just aim the
car, but if you use loop antennas, aiming won't be necessary anyway.
For 6M, a KB6KQ loop is hard to beat. Unless you have a yagi on 6m
with shortened elements (which you can leave up) , the normal 6M yagi is
too wide to remain up while driving. You will spend quite a bit of time
putting it up and taking it down to move.
