I don't know much about the IC-271, but I have a pair of the IC-290's;
one is an A and the other is an H model(a bit higher powered). They are
really solid rigs, easy to operate and seem to work well for me. There
is even space inside to work on them if needed. I know Jim W7DHC also
uses one and so does K7UU if I'm not mistaken, to drive transverters.
I think the IC-271 is more of a base station rig by size, and it
probably has a few more features, since it is a newer design. The IC-290
and it's cousin the IC 490 (430 MHz version) are about the size of an
older CB rig. I can get the dimentions for you or most any other info if
you need it.
