Jake: don't complain about the cops--they are doing their job of 
investigating anything peculiar, especially now that we are at war. I get 
stopped by the police several times every rove--they are friendly and 
peaceable if you have your info at hand and are friendly to them. I have a 
few paper signs that I made on the computer printer that say: "Emergency 
Amateur Radio Communications"...this vehicle and operator are participating 
in a test of emergency amateur radio communications. <name> & <call sign> We 
will be happy to explain this activity. Please do not interupt the 
communications in progress or distract the radio operator.
They are posted on the dashboard and rear window.
It's the millions of eyes that are out there--reporting lone vehicles on 
dirt roads and mountain-tops, alone in parking lots late at night, near cell 
and commercial communications sites that could potentially be sabotaged. 
It's part of the "game" of roving....and sometimes it's best to call ahead 
and let the state troopers or local gendarmes know your plans.
On the 6m antenna ---I have used a horizontal dipole for years...works 
fine...rotation optional--there was a neat article on a 90 degree rotation 
using a hinge arrangement--non-motorized--simply just the antenna attached 
to the hinge and the hinge to the mast---so goes in plane of car, or when 
operating or turning, perpendicular to it. Other option is a Delta loop of 
Halo--but I found dipole about 2 db better. Make sure SWR is low and it's 
operated in a position as far away from the car body as possible. 73, Rick,
