Jake: don't complain about the cops--they are doing their job of
investigating anything peculiar, especially now that we are at war. I get
stopped by the police several times every rove--they are friendly and
peaceable if you have your info at hand and are friendly to them. I have a
few paper signs that I made on the computer printer that say: "Emergency
Amateur Radio Communications"...this vehicle and operator are participating
in a test of emergency amateur radio communications. <name> & <call sign> We
will be happy to explain this activity. Please do not interupt the
communications in progress or distract the radio operator.
They are posted on the dashboard and rear window.
It's the millions of eyes that are out there--reporting lone vehicles on
dirt roads and mountain-tops, alone in parking lots late at night, near cell
and commercial communications sites that could potentially be sabotaged.
It's part of the "game" of roving....and sometimes it's best to call ahead
and let the state troopers or local gendarmes know your plans.
On the 6m antenna ---I have used a horizontal dipole for years...works
fine...rotation optional--there was a neat article on a 90 degree rotation
using a hinge arrangement--non-motorized--simply just the antenna attached
to the hinge and the hinge to the mast---so goes in plane of car, or when
operating or turning, perpendicular to it. Other option is a Delta loop of
Halo--but I found dipole about 2 db better. Make sure SWR is low and it's
operated in a position as far away from the car body as possible. 73, Rick,
K1DS
