I did some haggling with RS corporate headquarters in Texas a couple years
ago and purchased from their archives, the last remaining service manual
copies of the TRC-5xx series units and some misc Ham and wireless microphone
documentation AND, most importantly, the right to duplicate and distribute
copies of the manuals in case others ever wanted to modify the 49 MHz single
and multi-channel transceivers.
I've thought of both a Packet (AX.25) beacon on a tower on my land, solar
powered, just in case someone might hear it in the valley and respond and a
mobile beacon. Not sure how far I'd get under Part 15 regulations, but, one
never knows.
I also experiment with LTI, Long Time Integration modes (QRSs, SSCW) at
13.555,xxx MHz and have made 380 mile runs on 1.2mW, so am thinking about
pushing the envelope with 49 MHz.
I've been picking up most every TRC-5xx rig I've seen the past two or so
years and have four or five bankers boxes of rigs to play with, most new in
the box. I also have many hundres of 49 MHz remote control transmitters to
experiment with and also picked up some bags of 49.860 MHz crystals from an
R/C manufacturer in Hong Kong, in case someone wants to play on that
frequency.
I see you have a /7 on your call, where are you now? I'm near Carson City,
Nevada, seems to me I heard from a fellow north-east of me interested in 49
MHz beacons.

: I have two of the 5 channel units in the 500 series. I bought a couple of
9 volt battery eliminators for them to use them as wireless intercoms with a
neighbor, but we never got around to setting them up. I'd be interested to
hear if you run a packet link with yours.
