Hi Jay,
Mine is working fine on 4 AA NIMH cells right now. It reads about 5.1 or
5.0 volts right now. It turns on fine, it transmits fine, and I have been
running it for the better part of a week now on these cells. Interesting
that yours won't do anything. Mine is a later producted unit-SN 4777.
maybe they did a mod from earlier units.

John,
Power out on MINE is 0.00 watts!
My experience is that it won't turn on at less than about 5.5V. I tried
once on NiMH AA cells and it wouldn't turn on (4.8V nominal for the
pack). I reloaded the dry cell case with some old AA's I had - unused
but rather "stale" as they were leftovers from a public service event.
4 cells each at 1.3V (total 5.2V) still wouldn't bring it up. 4 cells
at 1.35V each (total 5.4V) and it would power up and receive, but
transmit even on low power it lasted about 5 minutes before it shut
down.
I also find that if I turn it on (using the LiIon battery) and it says
6.0V it will come on, but if I key up on high power it lasts just long
enough to kerchunk the repeater before it shuts down.
I guess when they say 6-15V operating range, they mean it (at least with
my specific model).

Jay

Does anyone know the power output of the HTX420 when it is run on 4 AA
NIMH batteries-around 5 volts or so? The QST review only covers the
power with the LiON battery.
