Based on the rest of your description, I suspect that the problem is 
in the A6A2 assembly and that the backup batteries had nothing to do 
with it (they had probably been dead for some time).  The 
intermittent failures you experienced were likely the early 
symptoms.  Of course, this is a diagnosis from afar based on very 
little information, so it could well be wrong.
