Do any of you have some experience using a Wiltron sweep generator and
scope to align a Racal RA-17(L) ?? I am interested in any tips you may have.
Is it even possible?Thanks, Ross

**** Hello Ross and the list.
I have not had any experience with a Wiltron sweep generator however there
is nothing magic about sweeping the RA17 40 MHz bandpass filter with any
sweeper capable of normal operation at that frequency. My sweeper is an
HP8601A with its companion 8600 digital marker. You will need very accurate
markers at the 40 MHz +/- 650 kHz and +/- 1 MHz points and a detector
preferably followed by a logarithmic amplifier although I have had
reasonable results without one of these being used. You will have to mark the
existing positions of each of the trimmer caps as it is very easy to get to
a point where nothing you do seems to make any sense so you go back and
start again, practice makes perfect..The EMERs E804 Handbook for the RA117
has a very detailed description of 40 MHz bandpass filter alignment which is
perfectly applicable to the 17 series, let me know if you (or anyone else on
the list) would like a scan.
Do not try to sweep align the 37.5 MHz filter, peak alignment is the way to
go.

Brian Goldsmith.
