Glenn, Now I feel bad... Obviously, though, that gold was "fool's gold,"
Ha!
I was told in 1970 by a sailor returning from the European theater just after
WWII that a lot of equipment got trenched there and that he had to throw
electronics overboard the whole way back. (*) He explained to me that this
was done to facilitate the re-start of the civilian economy. Otherwise, there
would just be too much stuff that people could buy well below the shutdown
cost of manufacturers.
Apart from the expansion of freedom -- and that most precious freedom of
conscience, war is at another level sheer waste. By contrast Stalin had been
trenching humans alive (including party loyalists) at such a rate that he
demanded to buy from us even bigger bulldozers. We refused to supply them.
The Navy is now using XXX Radios. Just think about the future possibilities.
(*). Yes, he was a ham. He was practically in tears the whole way, he said.

Before the base closure of Naval base Charleston, DRMO had a mountain of
R390s.
This was in the gold reclamation era that did not last too long.
There was a guy with an air chisel removing these 'gold' connectors from
the chassis and modules.
With many 55 gallon drums of these connectors, there was no gold.
I do not know what the gold colored plating was, but, it was not gold.
Gold does not corrode.
A local scrap yard bought these R390 receivers and dumped them into a
furnace to recover the aluminum.
