[R-390] Survey to Consider Moving R-390 Mail List to Groups.IO

Hi Jim,

Attachments are unfortunately unpredictably archived. With https://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/r-390/ small sized pdfs can be found usually by a highlighted link below the message but larger pdfs and most images are scrubbed by Mailman's policies.

The other searchable archive: https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ also scrubs off all attachments.

This was a major reason cited for the request to move to Groups.io. As the experts 'age-out', we are left with an incredibly valuable, detailed database but without pictures or attachments.

I understand your position, you are being more then fair.

Mailman is finicky in that it does not like to maintain the format I used when I post. I use DuckDuckGo but this might be happening with anything other then ASCII since Mailman is quite old, it was released in 1999. I can defeat the formatting issue by doing a double line return but I often forget that I'm posting to a Mailman server.

I doubt that anyone on this list is still using dial-up or are bandwidth limited so it would be nice to allow attachments and whatever else that would make posting here much easier and informative. Thoughts?

It's been a bit more than 2 weeks after my initial mail went out to the group. Among 500+ members, I received only 53 replies. While 90% were favorable to moving to Groups.IO, many of these replies sounded like it made no difference if we stayed or moved. Given the very small overall turnout, I do not feel comfortable taking this decision, so the mail server will remain as is. I hope those who requested the move will understand my actions.

Thanks to all who replied and thanks for letting me take up the bandwidth.

There has been a proposal to move our mailing list to Groups.io due to inconsistent mail/digest deliveries. Groups.io has a very user friendly interface, will send you email updates or digests plus it has a robust searchable archive of messages and files. The hosting fee is ~ $250/year.
If we can establish a minimum interest among the current 500+ r-390 at milman.qth.net <mailto:r-390 at milman.qth.net> members we can move forward.

All comments, suggestions, criticisms, etc are welcome.

Those who have already responded under the previous 'TEST' subject header need not reply again.

Thanks to all !
