[R-390] Question about a R-390A & R-725 with a silver faceplate

I know this is sacrilege, but here is a picture of my silver front SP-600. It has been suggested that these may have been "salesman's samples" or maybe a display piece for promotional purposes.  I doubt these went to an electronics expo in Las Vegas !
