Folks,Some excellent work here. Are we expected to leverage some sort of ORC and make the drawing text "searchable for discovery"?
In the examples provided none of the text is accessible as a graphic but no "accessible text".
PDF does stand the test of time. Also available is a simple jpg file that can be posted in many file format containers. What is the original data file encoded as?
How many drawings are we talking about, 100, 250, 500, 1,000?
One thought is to generate a html encoded template, pop the graphic files into each page, and add some reference text, this could be a master R390A drawing package.
I am sure team members would be more than glad to pitch in some $$ to have somebody spend some quality time to help this effort, I know I would.
It was nice seeing a drawing from 1953!

Jacques,
You got them from me.
If you want all of the drawings, first off, you need to get the CD - I was
offered the download by Carl Constanten some years ago. If needed, I should
be able to provide a link to the CD on my Onedrive - I wonder if we
shouldn't just put the whole thing on R-390a.net with a searchable database?
Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to do that but, I did have enough
skill to put on my Windows desktop.
1. As I think we have all discovered, the IndexR program on the CD with
the diagrams only installs on Windows 95 but …. I found a more recent
version of the program from the Army that works on Windows Vista, 7 and 10
and, I assume, 11. You can download from here -
https://g6msd.redstone.army.mil/msd_ref/IndexRSetup_V60031.exe Windows 10
will tell you that it may harm the computer and you need to jump through a
few hoops to first download and then to run it to install.
2. Once you install the IndexR program and run it:
a. click File – Open, Open a file of the selected type - Index file
b. Navigate to where you have the documents from the CD filed and,
under folder 17310 or 22971, click on the Index.DLF file. So, that gets us
the index to all the drawings that particular directory and I figured out
how to get the files to open in the viewer program by double clicking.
i. Under File | Configure, first click on the Directories Tab.
Under there, I put the following:
Index File Path: C:\Users\garyb\OneDrive\R-390A\R-390A
Drawings [where I saved the drawings]
Drawing Header File Path:
C:\Users\garyb\OneDrive\R-390A\R-390A Drawings\17310 [You can also use 22971
if you want to open the drawings in that folder]
I left the next 2 directories as they were populated by the
program.
3. Rather than using an updated version of ImageR to open the image
files (that’s the program on the CD), I decided to use XnView Classic or
XnView MP. If either of those programs are installed, then when you select
the correct file in the IndexR program and it will open. You can then print
to PDF in that program. You must ensure that .c4 files are associated with
the viewer program that you decide to use.
I have added descriptions to the Index.DLF files under 17310 and 22971 and
they are attached to be used in place of the index.DLF files on the CD.
To "convert" to PDF, in the XnView program, select Print and under the
printer select your favourite PDF printer - I use Microsoft Print to PDF and
then save the output as a PDF.
I spent some time one night editing some of the PDFs in Adobe Acrobat to
make them fill more of a page when printing. As an example, see the 2
attached no. 86 under directory 13710/00/00, one original and one edited.
Regards,

Thank you for your effort, Tom, but I already have those two since March and
April 2019.
I do not remember from where they came, however,,, I also have the four .pdf
attached which I believe to came from the same dataset.
Please let us know if more of those "old format" files can be successfully
converted...

I spent a good bit of time trying to housebreak the R-390A drawing set
today. They are in C4 format. The original indexer and viewer would not work
on my PC as the apps are 25 years old. I found newer apps online but still
could not get the indexer to work so I was flying blind in the documents
(over 900) but eventually found the knob drawings.
I then converted them to PDF. See below.
