The Nike Hercules missile systems used those type of connectors everywhere,
with one difference, the pins were removable with a special tool. Therefore,
a broken pin was not a big deal!

Metric to the rescue!
0.040" is very close to 1mm (1mm = .03937"). Using a 1mm drill bit and 1mm
brass rod should work FB. You may even be able to find 1mm round header
pins that are already rounded at the tip.
