Hi Paul,
I found the SE-3 on eBay. I got lucky and “bought it now” before it was snatched up. My R390 is freshly restored and is indeed in a CY-979 cabinet. There are louvers on the top, but they may not be visible in the video. Everything was painted in Rustoleum Stain Granite. I painted it all myself. An older post goes into how I did it along with the lettering. Thanks for the good words!
Best of luck with your R390! I love mine!
John

Hi John,
Beautiful setup. I've got a great EAC R-390A but my new pride and joy is a similar vintage Collins R-390 that came last week. Installed the solid state 6082 replacement and I swapped PTOs and now it's right on frequency.
I'm curious as to where you found the SE-3. I've had several of them, one coming from Rob himself but unfortunately sold them years ago.
Also wondering where/how you painted the front panel. It looks amazing as does the cabinet.
Finally, I've got a CY-979 cabinet which is similar looking to yours, but mine has louvers on top whereas yours is flat. What kind of cabinet is that? I'm asking because the Collins is now in the CY-979 and the EAC needs a new cabinet.
Best regards,
Paul

I scored a vintage Sherwood Se-3 synchronous detector. I aligned the front
end of the Sherwood along with the 5 kHz notch filter and here's the result.
Paired with my R-390 it's unbeatable. The Sherwood pulls AM audio out of
the mud remarkably. It also functions as a selectable sideband synchronous
detector by offset tuning. Lastly, she functions as a product detector for
SSB.
I took a video of my R-390 using the Sherwood SE-3 with the R-390 tuned to
All India Radio in English on 9455 kHz. You can view it here:

O really weak AM signals, the Sherwood means the difference between readable
audio and not! I'll take more videos of it handling SSB as long as weak SSB
signals
