There's significant amateur AM activity (in the middle of the country at 
least) in the AM windows (centered around 1885, 3885, and 7290 kHz) with 
every kind of rig from screen modulated novice rigs to broadcast 
transmitters and SDRs.  Depending on where you live,  AM nets can be 
heard most days of the week.

There's more reason to listen to shortwave than in many years in my 
opinion, thanks to WTWW on 5085 kHz at night, serving the amateur radio 
and SWL market and recreating the sound of sixties top forty radio:

Hook up a hi-fi amp and good speaker to the diode load and crank out the 
bandwidth!
