R-390 folks,

I chatted with a fellow at a recent hamfest who was a radio intercept operator during his military time. He said each fellow had four R-390A’s and one SP-600. The SP-600 was to locate a desired signal, and once located, an R-390A was tuned to the frequency for copying. He did say that commonly monitored operators became known to them from their CW fist characteristics, and even got nicknames among the operators. Apparently 30 WPM was common.

I am assuming that the shift supervisor would assign frequencies for monitoring to each of the fellows on duty. I also assume that the receivers were fed from multi-output signal splitters (what is the right name for those things?) operating from a set of antennas.
