[R-390] White lines on knobs

HI Larry,

 

It took a  bit of experimentation to get it right.  Both with paint and application.  For paint I settled on acrylic model paint from Vallejo called “Model Color” that I picked up at my local hobby shop.  I used color “Ivory.”  It has good body.

 

Application was a bit trickier.  I settled on using a hypodermic style syringe with interchangeable tips.  I used a really fine tip.  It was fine enough that the paint came out slowly enough to control, but was also sufficiently fine that I kept having to replace tips since they clogged after a few knobs. The a quick swipe with a dry finger to smooth it out and remove the excess.  A little rubbing alcohol on a tissue can be used to get rid of any smears as long as the knobs were painted with good paint (Krylon is not alcohol resistant).  It’s important if the rubbing alcohol is to be used that the black paint on the knobs is fully cured else just about any rattle can paint comes off.  If the knobs still smell like paint, they’re not yet cured.  An oven bake at 200F cures the black paint quickly.  I used Rustoleum black gloss for my R390A and VHT stain black engine enamel for my R390.

John,  As I mentioned to you a short time ago, I'm redoing all the black on the 'A' I'm working on now and have come to the point where I need to apply the white lines on the knobs.  I like how yours turned out and this has been a problem for me in the past, so I was wondering what paint you used and your method of application.  Thanks.
