[R-390] Apollo 11 50 years ago

I came home from college (Cal-State Long Beach) for the weekend. Watched
the moon landing and walk on my mom's TV.  She asked why I was so
interested in it.  I surprised her by saying that I'd have easily given
body parts to be up there in place of Neil Armstrong. I had returned
from Vietnam the previous year and had gone back to school.  I was
studying Electrical Engineering.

The following week, when the Apollo 11 crew was re-entering the
atmosphere, I was sitting in a EE class.  The teacher was a retired Rear
Admiral who was also our undergrad advisor. He had a heart condition and
all of us vets helped him up and down the stairs of the engineering
building.  At the time of the Apollo 11 re-entry, the city of Long Beach
lit off all the air-raid sirens in town as a salute.  Admiral Goldman
turned white, grabbed his chest and partially collapsed over his
lectern.  All of us ran to his aid. He caught his breath and exclaimed,
"Son of a Bitch! All I could think of was, 'Its Pearl Harbor, and the
Japs are coming!'" He had been Commander on a ship in Pearl Harbor at
the time of the attack.
